Dear Dr Saltzman--

I don't know if you can help me. I have a compulsion to finish any task that I start. If I don't start the task I am ok, but as soon as I begin I must finish the task. If I open a packet of biscuits I carry on eating until they have all gone --even if I am no longer hungry. If I start cleaning the house I cannot stop until every room is clean and tidy even though I am exhausted. I am in my 50s and really want to get rid of my abnormal behaviour. I feel I need a label for my illness--do you know what it is called? I hope you can help me or at least point me in the right direct to get more information.

Kind regards,

Janet

Dear Janet--

I suggest that you do some internet research on obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) to see if it applies to you. If so, I would recommend that you find a psychologist who specializes in the treatment of OCD. OCD is not dangerous, and can be left untreated, but with proper treatment you might feel much more comfortable and might find that life is more enjoyable too.

I hope this will help.

Be well
