Dear Dr. Robert,

When i'm standing on the roof of a building I have an incredible urge to jump. I have to move away from the edge for fear I will act on this feeling. I'm not suicidal and feel perfectly fine otherwise. I'm 43 years old and cannot remember when these feelings started. Please help.

Bob DeSante

Dear Bob DeSante--

This is the kind of thing which should be discussed person to person with a trained psychotherapist. I understand that you do not feel suicidal, and that other than this urge to jump from high places you feel OK. Nevertheless, if the urge to jump really is as powerful as you say, a chat with an expert seems advisable, particularly since you closed your letter with the words "please help." Possibly one meeting would take care of the matter.

Be well.
